Watermelon Lime Margaritas

John and I both enjoy homemade margaritas. We make Mexican food more than we do the laundry, and we always choose margaritas to accompany it. We’ve mostly stuck with more traditional flavors, but I couldn’t get rid of the idea of making a watermelon-flavored margarita. So, we took a trip to our porch to try it out.

It always happens that someone will notice you doing something “risque,” like making cocktails out on your porch. It just so happened that the neighbor’s grandchildren were in town and went “trick-or-treating” to get healthy snacks during the off-season. They ended up on our front porch… with the liquor. Two innocent children, two large bottles of triple sec and tequila, and us. Hide the evidence quickly!

John quickly hid bottles before they asked, “Hey, Mr., What’s that?” As I asked them the name of their pet, they were distracted. Although I can’t recall the dog’s name, I was able to divert the attention of my audience from the magician who shuffled bottles behind a curtain. Averted a potentially awkward situation. Phew.

I bought the kids a muffin with banana and almond meal so that they wouldn’t leave empty-handed. Once they had left, we went back to work.

John had to use his magic touch and combine the remaining ingredients, which were Tequila triple sec and lime. Do your thing, boy.

This recipe is easy to make and perfect for summer parties.

After dinner, we sipped generously on our porch. We can’t get enough of the beautiful weather in Kansas. Evenings and afternoons outside are a must. It’s a good thing that there are things like watermelon-lime margaritas to cool us off.

These margaritas can be made with very few ingredients and in a short amount of time.

If you do not have watermelon, blend your watermelon with lime juice to make a frozen blended Margarita.

You can use regular ice if you don’t want to buy watermelon. The watermelon juice will still give the drink a lot of flavor. You can also make them virgin by omitting the alcohol. I’m sure they would still taste great. Enjoy the perfect summer drink!

Ingredients

  • How to make 12 ounces of fresh watermelon Juice (see below for instructions // 12 ounces will yield 1 1/2 cups).
  • 3-4 ounces of tequila, depending on the strength you prefer
  • Triple sec 1 ounce
  • One medium lime, juiced
  • 15-18 cubes of watermelon (optional, but recommended).
  • Salt for Margaritas ( optional// for lining the rim)

Instructions

  • Pour to make watermelon puree, and place half of a small watermelon in a Blender. Puree until smooth. Pour the juice into a jar after straining through a fine mesh sieve. Refrigerate until ready for use.
  • For watermelon ice, cut the remaining half of the watermelon into cubes and place them on a baking tray. Be careful not to touch them, or they will stick together. Freeze them for at least 4-5 hours, overnight or until they are very solid.
  • Add watermelon, lime, tequila, and triple sec into a cocktail pitcher or shaker and shake or stir vigorously.
  • Then, dip two glasses in margarita salt after rubbing a quarter of lime around them. Fill the glass 3/4 full with watermelon cubes.
  • Serve immediately. Add an extra lime wedge to the garnish.
